‘You can love me or hate me, I don’t mind,’ zingt Jonah Tolchin in I Wonder. Het is een van de prijsnummers van zijn nieuwe CD Thousand Mile Night, een prachtplaat waarop hij oude blues en folk naar zich toetrekt, er een dosis soul en Springsteen aan toevoegt en wat resulteert in originele, meeslepende en soms hartverscheurende Jonah Tolchin-muziek. Wat de plaat nog extra bijzonder maakt, is dat ie opgenomen is in de FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, waar lang geleden ook Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett en Aretha Franklin hun beste muziek produceerden. Thousand Mile Night, geproduceerd door Marvin Etzioni, is op zijn eigen manier net zo meesterlijk.
Immediately after Jonah Tolchin finished recording his new album, ‘Thousand Mile Night,’ he got behind the wheel and lived it, driving from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, all the way back to his native New Jersey with guitarist Lucas Hamren and drummer Michael Bosco in one straight shot. By the time the car finally coasted into Hamren’s driveway in the early dawn light, the odometer had accumulated 998 miles. The journey wasn’t quite over yet, though. Tolchin said his goodbyes, gathered his things from the back seat, and began the walk to his childhood home on nearby Clover Lane. It was precisely two more miles.
