Het was al een tijdje verdacht stil rond de fantastische rootsband Wrinkle Neck Mules uit Richmond, Virginia. De reden daarvan is nu duidelijk. Leider Andy Stepanian en multi-instrumentalist Mason Brent hadden het druk met een ander project. Hun groep heet Leon III en dat is ook de titel van hun eerste plaat. Producer is Mark Nevers (Bonnie Prince Billy, Lambchop, Silver Jews) en dat is hoorbaar. Hij laat de liedjes gloedvol, soms zelfs klassiek en bombastisch klinken wat van Leon III een meer dan formidabele CD maakt. Opvallend: naast de fraaie eigen nummers is er een eigenzinnige cover van Velvet Underground’s Jesus.
The debut album by Leon III (pronounced “Leon The Third”), the new project from former Wrinkle Neck Mules members Andy Stepanian and Mason Brent. To kick off this fresh endeavor, the pair decamped to Nashville for the legendary Beech House Studios (this album would be the final sessions for the 30-year-old studio, which is being moved to South Carolina) and put their songs and their trust in the hands of a small army of session musicians. And their collective efforts helped shepherd into reality a measured masterpiece of sweetly psychedelic ramblers, spacious folk-pop, and lived in roots-rock.
