Sophie Janna :: Wide World

Sophie Janna is de helft van het recentelijk stevig aan de weg timmerende duo The Lasses. Maar ze heeft zichzelf ook altijd de ruimte gegeven met andere muzikanten te werken. Wide World, een soloplaat, is daar weer een fraai voorbeeld van. De eerste helft van de plaat, vier eigen nummers, nam ze op met Brits-Italiaanse muzikanten. Drie van die vier nummers nam ze later nog eens op in Nederland met Kaspar Laval op bouzouki en multi-instrumentalist Janos Koolen. Wide World, die qua lengte tussen een EP en LP inzit, is een meesterlijke folkplaat. Soms zo kaal en sober als Gillian Welch, maar altijd met enorme zeggingskracht dankzij de Sandy Denny-achtige hemelse stem van Sophie Janna.

Sophie’s natural singing style and her clear tone reveal that she was born into a family of singers. But she truly found her own voice when she lived in Edinburgh, where traditional ballads are still performed in pubs and living rooms, accompanied sparsely by a guitar, a violin or a softly hummed harmony. Sophie took her love for traditional songs with her to hometown Amsterdam and kept singing them in the years to come.
