Svante Sjöblom :: Before It Breaks

De Zweed Svante Sjöblom draait al lang mee in Scandinavische blues- en folkkringen. Zijn eerste soloplaat dateert van veertien jaar geleden, in 2018 maakte hij een alleraardigst album met het Deense trio Twang, maar nu in 2022 slaat hij pas echt toe. Before It Breaks is een sublieme plaat waarop blues, folk, jazz en gospel samensmelten in twaalf krachtige eigen nummers. Zelf ziet hij veel verwantschap met de rootsmuziek die Ry Cooder in de jaren zeventig maakte en hoewel zijn stem minder piept en kraakt ligt in zijn eigenzinnige benadering een vergelijking met Tom Waits ook voor de hand. Hoe dan ook, Before It Breaks is een emotioneel geladen en muzikaal gedurfde prachtplaat.

Yes, it’s been 14 long years since his first and so far only solo album. But Svante Sjöblom has used the years well, fine tuning his craft and developing from a very skillful, teenage guitar wizard into a soulful, highly accomplished Musician. All while playing live at blues- and folk-clubs and festivals all over Scandinavia. Solo, with his own band or with other prominent Scandinavian artists like Sofie Livebrant or Sofia Karlsson (both. of them making guest appearances on “Before It Breaks”).
